2022 is about to end. So it makes sense to discuss the buzzword of the tech industry – metaverse. You might be among the chosen few if you haven’t heard of metaverse yet.
Hearing about the metaverse isn’t enough, though. One has to experience it to appreciate what the metaverse is about. So how can you experience the metaverse to its fullest?
Or should we ask how to enter metaverse? Because entering the metaverse is the first step toward experiencing it.
Do you need VR Headsets?
VR (Virtual Reality) headsets are all the rage. Meta even bought Oculus, the world’s biggest VR headset developer, to create a headset of their own.
So are VR headsets necessary to access the metaverse?
Strictly speaking, no. You don’t need VR headsets to enter the metaverse. But having one takes the experience to a whole new level. If you’re on a budget, buying a separate device that costs upwards of $1000 isn’t a priority.
And by definition, the metaverse is a collection of virtual worlds interconnected digitally. You can access these worlds through various channels. So a headset isn’t a requirement but more of an add-on.
What do you need?
It depends. A stable internet connection is integral. You can’t access any metaverse without the internet.
You also need a device – a device that can access the internet and the metaverse. What would that device be?
It depends on the type of metaverse you’re trying to enter. If it’s a desktop-based metaverse, you need a powerful PC. Because it needs to render everything in real-time.
Some metaverses, like XANA, are mobile-based. Meaning you can access these through your mobile. These metaverses are usually decentralized and require less processing power to operate.
You would benefit from a headphone too. After all, you don’t want others to hear what you’re doing in your virtual life. It also gives you a private experience required to immerse yourself in the world.
What Type of Avatar do you get?
When you enter a metaverse, you get a digital avatar that represents you in the virtual world. You will find four types of avatars in the metaverse, namely 2D, 3D, VR (without legs), and Full Body.
As the name suggests, these avatars are only visible in 2D space. These are flat avatars that are usually found on social media and represent a 3D avatar.
A 3D avatar is one you can view from different angles. You see that avatar as a third-person, similar to playing a single-player game. The difference between these avatars and those from games is freedom. Your avatar in the metaverse does as you ask them to do. While in a game, your avatar is bound by game mechanics and story.
Virtual Avatars (Without Legs)
If you’re using a virtual headset, chances are you’re accessing the metaverse through a virtual avatar. It ensures full immersion because you view the world from your avatar’s perspective. But your avatar doesn’t have legs. So you feel like you’re in the uncanny valley when you move your avatar.
Virtual Avatar (Full Body)
This is the most immersive form of virtual avatars. Your avatar has a complete body that can move around in the 3D virtual space. This requires a lot of processing power, thus making it hard to implement on a mainstream level. But in R&D, this type of avatar is helping pace the development of new technologies.
What to do with your metaverse avatar?
Metaverse avatars are very important and can perform various tasks like their real-life counterpart.
Your avatar may become a tour guide in the metaverse, guiding others to the treasure it cannot possess. If you’re a fashion designer and want to break into the metaverse, you can do so by creating virtual fashion accessories.
You can also direct events in the metaverse. These events are a great way to immerse people in the metaverse. You’d be making huge sums if you organized big virtual events with big names to attract a large number of their fans. Travis Scott’s virtual concert is one of those events.
If you don’t want to work, metaverses have many recreational options, like P2E games. You can spend time achieving new stats and creating new friends. And at the same time, you’d be earning from the metaverse.
Another way you can be a part of the metaverse is by attending events. You don’t have to go through the ordeal of organizing everything. You can be a fan and simply enjoy what your favorite artist has to offer.
So what’s next?
It’s very simple. We move forward towards a more virtual world. More aspects of our real-world lives will be affected by what we do in the virtual world – metaverse.
Eventually, different metaverses will merge, and we’ll get a unified metaverse where people will interact through their avatars. And this future isn’t very far.
